So I'm on-line with HRTS-Now What?

April 27, 2004 Welcome to HRTS On-line. This blog is being established to discuss the various ways that you can maximize your HRTS on-line experience. Periodically, we will start a new discussion on a different aspect of the new HRTS site. The following is excerpted from the winning Perfect Corporate Weblog Pitch Competition by Lee LeFever with some additional comments from Matthew Phillips, the HRTS's web design consultant, and resident expert on on-line social networking in general!

So what is this Blog I keep hearing about?

One of the most exciting and innovative ways to use the Web is found in the blogging ("Web logging") phenomenon. While bloggers chronicle the news, they also chronicle their own lives. Some bloggers use their sites to post personal journals and diaries. The difference with blogs, of course, is their public nature. What's fascinating is how many people want to make the most personal and private details of their life public.

BLOGS: First, think about the value of the Wall Street Journal to business leaders. The value it provides is context — the Journal allows readers to see themselves in the context of the financial world each day, which enables more informed decision making.

With this in mind, think about HRTS as a microcosm of the financial world. Can the HRTS members see themselves in the context of the whole HRTS membership? Would more informed decisions be made industry wide if members had access to internal news sources?

Weblogs serve this need. By making internal websites simple to update, weblogs allow individuals/members and teams to maintain online journals that chronicle projects inside the Industry. These professional journals make it easy to produce and access internal news, providing context to the Industry — context that can profoundly affect decision making. In this way, weblogs allow members and leaders to make more informed decisions through increasing their awareness of internal news and events.

To begin your very own Blog, simply click on the "My Blog" button on the left side of the screen and scroll down to the "Body" window and type. The rest....as they say...is web history!

Call for Discussion Leaders

In the coming months the HRTS is planning on hosting a number of Industry Leader Discussion Forums on the HRTS site. If you have a specific area of interest or specialty that you feel may be of interest to other members ot the HRTS Community..here's your chance to get up on the soapbox and share your views with others within your industry. HRTS is looking for a few discussion forum leaders, people with a strong point of view and a desire to solicit and encourage discussion amongst the HRTS membership. If this is you, please email Dave@HRTS.ORG and let's get the discussions going!

Kindest regard,

Dave Ferrara

Creating a new forum discussion.

Since our organization represents so many different
areas of interest within the broadcasting industry, HRTS.ORG was designed to accommodate creation of multiple discussion forums.

You, as an HRTS member, can create a discussion on any topic you deem interesting or relevant to other HRTS members. Okay, so maybe others might not feel as interested as you might, but such is the democratic reality of the internet! In any event, to create a discussion forum, simply click on "Create Content" on the left menu. It will give you a selection of various types of content you can create. Choose "forum Topic". You will be directed to the standard posting screen. Type in a subject. Tab down to, and select the "Forum" within which to place the discussion (ie: News, HRTS Luncheons, Site Tips, or if you are feeling generous and want to compliment HRTS on such a wonderful online experience...Suggestions and Praise!) Then tab down to the "Body" window. At this point, its time to create.

Often, members will copy and paste an article, quote, etc... from some other source (ie: Hollywood Reporter, LA Times, etc..) And then comment on it. This starts the ball rolling and encourages other members to comment as well. (A bit of etiquette...when copying and pasting an article, it is appropriate to cite the source in your post.) (ie: Bob Smith-Hollywood Reporter, June 2003...)

BTW..Note that our site is not "WYSIWYG" (what you see is what you get) I know...we're working on it..... Until then, if it looks like you need to add a break, or new paragraph...just add a "p" within left and right angle brackets (just look at the little note "allowed html tags" to see what I mean.) at the end of the line. The site will make a paragraph break for you. I'd show it to you here but you'd just get a paragraph break.

When you've added all you wish to start the conversation, click on submit and it will be saved. Click on back to Forums, then right click to refresh and you should see you discussion group appear. Again, I know that it seems like it coud be a bit easier, but my teenage daughter was able to explain it to me pretty easily! Till next time.
